NC State Magazine: 'In the Shadow of the Bomb'
From the Nominator
Just as the movie “Oppenheimer” was about to come out, our editor learned that one of our alumni was a researcher in Hiroshima, Japan, studying the effects of the atomic bomb on survivors and their offspring. We corresponded with Munechika Misumi and were able to conduct an interview over Zoom that resulted in this profile. We made reference to "Oppenheimer," which was not released in Japan, and helped bring home to readers the effects of the bomb--something they may not have fully understood from the movie. The story was published on Aug. 3, just as Japan was pausing to remember the anniversary of the bombing.
From the Judges
This entry demonstrates timely and insightful journalism, leveraging the release of the movie "Oppenheimer" to shed light on the ongoing research conducted by an alum in Hiroshima. By connecting the movie's narrative to real-world effects, the story deepens understanding and prompts reflection. The decision to publish online ahead of the print edition shows agility in capitalizing on current events.
