Piece by Piece
From the Nominator
York visual arts student Ekow Nimako was featured on the cover of the winter issue of the 2023 York University Magazine. His fantastical sculptures, made from black LEGOs, are informed by Afrofuturism, a cultural aesthetic in which elements of Black history combine with science fiction. Nimako’s detail and creativity and his growing reputation in international art circles offered the magazine an opportunity to showcase the artist. Ekow and his work, which is fairly large scale, were photographed in his small basement studio, which created lighting and logistical challenges. It was important to balance the content and compositions to reflect the man as well as his work. We strove to capture the contemporary verve of the art and its themes of black identity. Nimako was a worthy example of York’s diverse, talented creators pursuing their passions.
