Piece by Piece
From the Nominator
Afrofuturist artist Ekow Nimako, the focus of a cover story for The York University Magazine, has made an international name for himself by using black LEGO pieces to craft otherworldly life-sized sculptures that explore themes of diversity, inclusivity, equity, and Black empowerment. We assigned a noted visual art critic and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) writer to do the story, and magazine staff also contributed. A freelance photographer known for arresting portrait photography ensured that the accompanying visuals were bold and impactful. The result was a read about a unique artist whose creative projects, seen in museums and galleries around the world, envision new ways of understanding African and diasporic identities.
From the Judges
