South Magazine Anniversary Issue and Redesign
From the Nominator
The University of South Alabama, founded in 1963, serves the Gulf Coast region as a four-year institution, with enrollment of nearly 14,000 and an academic medical system. South Magazine is the university's signature publication, published twice a year and distributed to all alumni, donors, state and local legislators, and friends of the institution. As we embarked on our 60th anniversary celebration, we decided to use South Magazine to commemorate the occasion. In addition to being the 60th anniversary edition, this issue also reflects a significant redesign, an effort initiated by the Office of Marketing and Communications in collaboration with the USA National Alumni Association. We utilized the CASE magazine survey to inform our approach and hired a New Orleans-based design firm to help with the organization and layout. In this special issue, the editorial content leans into the short but storied history of the university. The 48-page publication incorporates illustration, photography, and best practices in magazine design and serves as a showpiece befitting of the Flagship of the Gulf Coast. The special issue was unveiled at the December Board of Trustees meeting and landed in mailboxes shortly after, in time for year-end giving.
