Space Corn
From the Nominator
The entry wanted to draw attention to a group of University of Nebraska–Lincoln researchers wanting to find ways to sustainably grow food on space stations, the moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies. That knowledge might eventually sustain legions of humankind. The university formed the Consortium of Space, Policy, Agriculture, Climate, and Extreme Environment—SPACE2, for short. Our goals were to illustrate an ambitious, new research initiative. We wanted to reach state-wide placements and national agriculture publications, and we were very successful. The story appeared in Omaha World-Herald (https://go.unl.edu/fom2). It also was picked up by Beatrice Daily Sun, Columbus Telegram, Fremont Tribune, Grand Island Independent, Kearney Hub, Lexington Clipper-Herald, North Platte Telegraph, Scottsbluff Star-Herald, Wahoo Newspaper, York News-Times, and Sioux City Journal. In addition, the story got coverage on TV, radio, and agriculture outlets.
