• Paying for A World Class Affiliation: Foreign Funding and Reputation Laundering in the University sector
  
  The last decade has seen a surge in foreign donations to higher education institutions. In the UK alone, an increase in tuition fees and the ramping up of development efforts have led to a near-tripling of philanthropic donations received by universities. While the benefits of these internationalisation trends are clear, research into how they might impact academic freedom is lacking. Drawing on primary research (consisting of a survey with officers in charge of donations at elite UK and US universities) as well as publicly available secondary data, we examine how foreign donors may engage with Western universities to launder their reputations. We identify the main legal obligations that UK and US universities face when accepting foreign gifts, discuss some of the dangers of undue influence that might accompany this funding, and highlight some recent cases of reputation laundering in the higher education sector. Although we do not find that reputation laundering is rampant in the higher education, we note that universities often face severe pressure to accept funds from questionable foreign sources - and that they are often left scrambling to redefine past relations and break ties with donors in response to curren events.

  As we emerge from a period where our working lives have become almost exclusively online and based in our own homes, we face a new set of challenges and opportunities. This session will provide a forum for Development Services leaders to reflect on some of the key learning from our current working context and to discuss some of the questions facing us as we emerge from the current phase of the pandemic, including:
  
  •  What have we found to be effective when maintaining team cohesiveness, effectiveness, and motivation during the period of working from home?
  
  •  What were the main challenges we faced during this period?
  
  •  In our new working environment, how will we organise our work when some staff members are at home and others are in the office?

• Creative Digital Engagement and Stewardship – what we learnt from working through a pandemic
  
  It’s quite a reflective time of the year, as we approach the anniversary of almost entirely living and working from home, and over this period digital engagement and stewardship activities have been creatively adapted in a myriad of ways across thousands of institutions to fit the ‘new way of living’ in which we found ourselves. This session will be an opportunity to reflect on the lessons learnt from this time, and share some success stories from people who have ‘tried something new’ in the last year. A panel of colleagues from across Oxford, representing an undergraduate college, a graduate college, a prep-school, and the central University, will share their experiences of adapting their in-person events and communications strategies to creatively engage with their audiences in new ways. From video campaigns to online drinks receptions, gaudies to virtual alumni weekends, the panel will discuss their best attempts, their most challenging moments, and the skills and experiences of engaging their audiences during 2020 – and beyond. Join us for a frank conversation, and hopefully some inspiring and comforting examples of what worked (and what didn’t). Since its creation in 1965 Warwick University has had a special relationship with one donor before all others. The 29th May 1961 Charitable Trust has supported the university at all stages of its evolution. In this session you will hear directly from a funder who will share their extensive experience as a charity Director, Trustee, and long term donor to a university. Elizabeth Rantzen, Trustee of The 29th May 1961 Charitable Trust will be in conversation with Matt Ferguson, Director of Development & Alumni Engagement, University of Warwick, helping you to demystify the world of Trust and Foundation philanthropy. They will address topics including: What issues do Trustees face in their decision making? How do you become a Trustee and what skills do you need? What is an ethical dilemma for a charity? How do charities like to hear from recipients? And what’s the secret to making a perfect Moscow Mule?

The 29th May 1961 Charitable Trust is a long standing donor to the University of Warwick, and has given the University nearly £42m to date.  In 2019, in honour of the history of the Trust’s contributions to Warwick, the University conferred the Benefactors’ Medal on the Trust and established 29th May as a day to celebrate all giving to the University. This year’s 29th May Annual Giving Day will enable everyone to recognise and contribute to the role that philanthropy plays in the advancement of the University.
