Core Competencies for Senior Alumni Relations Leaders
Today’s senior alumni relations leaders must position their alumni organization to meet the 21st-century demands of exponentially-large alumni populations. Chief alumni professionals (CAOs) must possess the executive competencies that best drive new engagement, contemporary membership offerings (if at play), and followership opportunities that resonate with today’s large, diverse, and complex alumni bases.  This high-performance work must also be executed while managing and maximizing the use of tools and technologies to achieve success. 

In this timely session, we will do a deep-dive into the core, leadership competencies foundational to success in today’s multi-leveled and matrixed alumni relations/association shops. To be frank, we have to know our strengths and weaknesses in order to soar in this work!

Work-Life Balance while Meeting Strategic Goals
So, before we get too far along into your advancement career, it’s imperative that one understands, appreciates and values that, in reality, there is no such thing as work-life balance—the very idea is BS!  Why? Because it’s unachievable. It’s not realistic. It ain't gonna happen!

In shorthand, work and life are not separate. They never have been. They never will be.  To suggest that work is separate from life is ridiculous.  Work is part of who we are and what we do, and alumni relations is certainly no different.  In fact, alumni relations work is how you live—it’s a lifestyle—and not for the faint of heart! 

In this painfully open and honest session, we will debate, discuss, and decide upon the truths, myths, and rewards of one the most amazing professions and lifestyles on the planet—alumni relations!  From this session, attendees will return home with tools, tips, and tactics to ensure you have a rewarding, successful, well-being and well-balanced life and lifestyle in higher education—meeting goals, taking names and enjoying the journey!

In this timely and engaging session, come prepared as an active participant documenting current and evolving trends within alumni relations. Deconstructing a trend as local, regional, national, or global can be an equally productive learning exercise as we facilitate creation of action plans that are both proactive and pragmatic. This session will close with an engaging “5 years from now, 10 years from now” predictions game.

Hurricanes, wild fires, floods, mass shootings. These major events happen where members of your university community live and work. Abrupt leadership changes, scandals and national championships. All impact a variety of constituencies at your university. What is the role of alumni relations in providing this information to university constituencies? How do we align the messaging with the university? What do you say when you cannot say anything? How do we mobilize outreach and support when members of our community are in need? Alumni relations and communications will share stories and insights on how to navigate these tricky communications issues.

Working with Senior Leadership
Alumni relations has changed over the last 25 years. Most colleges/universities have multiple generations of alumni and each generation has a different view of how they should interact with their alma mater. How do you convey the importance of alumni relations and relationships to senior leadership? Is it okay to forget about alumni participation or should we work to keep our alumni close?

Working with alumni takes a greater effort than sending out a couple of newsletters or planning an annual big event. Take a look at how colleges and universities are working to engage alumni through social interaction, affinity activities, professional and career development, and lifelong learning. There is no one solution, however we need investment and buy in from senior leadership to move into the new age of relationships.
