Making Sense of Multimedia 
360 VR video, SnapChat stories, audio podcasts and animated GIFs are just some of the "digital threads" that make up the tapestry that is multimedia in 2019. How did we get here? Why did we get here? What were the driving forces behind the convergence of previously divergent media formats? And finally what opportunities do these diverse streams offer us in terms of higher education digital strategy? Multimedia veteran Ravi Jain takes a long look back to the genesis of employing multiple media elements to tell stories, in a journey that extends over 50 years. With historical and contemporary examples, Jain will break out the conceptual cornerstones to effective multimedia experiences and raise practical questions about how to successfully deploy multimedia in the higher education landscape.

Telling Your Story with Multimedia 
We'll discuss the current multimedia landscape in higher education and offer insights and approaches to the work of telling an institution's story, utilizing case studies of recent work from other institutions, as well as his own work as a documentary-style video and multimedia producer for the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. This presentation will survey leading edge projects across higher education and other institutions and discuss an overall approach to the work of institutional storytelling that is rooted in the authentic voices of our communities.

The Basics of Podcasting and Audio-Based Multimedia Production
In recent years, podcasting has gone mainstream. With podcast-only audio hits like Serial and The Daily, more people are talking about podcasts, and making them, and universities are no exception. In this session, we will explore the basics of podcasting and audio-based multimedia production. You will leave the class with a good sense of the type of project you can make, how to shape your idea, and what you need to do to launch your endeavor.

Single Framer to Multi-framer Photography in Higher Education 
In this session we'll talk about the progression of being a visual storyteller like many other university photographers in the field today. Beginning with straight up shooting photos, to mixing stills, audio, and video to create storytelling multimedia pieces, and ending with jumping into video. Participants will gain lots of practical knowledge they can take back to their shops. We'll cover quick hits on photography lighting and techniques, mobile transmission, underwater photography, quick and dirty audio (taken by a visuals guy), prioritizing stills vs video, and transitioning to shooting video for a single framer. This session will also touch on working with a team, authentic storytelling, and all the gear that we use.

How to Distribute and Measure Content on Social and Web
You'll spend much of this workshop learning how to make great content. But once it's created -- how can you get it front of your audiences? In this session, we'll talk about utilizing social media to distribute our multimedia content in ways that are creative, accessible, engaging, and fun! We'll also talk about how to measure the reach and engagement of our content, and how to set reasonable goals for those numbers.

We will talk specifically about promoting video, photos, audio, and live content across YouTube, Vimeo, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and more!
