Overview of Environment for Structure of Major Gifts
Examine major gift planning in the context of current economic conditions, changes in donor populations, proposed tax law changes, and increased competition for the charitable dollar. Discover how these and other factors are irrevocably changing the ways many major donors will structure their gifts.
 

3:15–4:15
When Passion Meets Planning
Ironically, some of the largest development programs with the most highly specialized staff members can be among the least effective in structuring larger gifts. With the aging of the donor base and uncertain economic climate, it is inevitable that there will need to be greater interaction between staff specialists in gift planning and those who are charged with other aspects of donor relations. Learn why historical perspectives may have contributed to this, and how successful organizations are adapting to new models that are donor-centric and team oriented. Share your organizational structures with other conference attendees and start to reexamine the best models.

Structuring Cost Effective Gifts from Younger Donors
More than 25 percent of the U. S. population will pass the age of 65 over the coming 20 years. This group will be retiring in large numbers and moving into the time of life where they are planning for the from 20 to 40 years or more so it is important to examine ways to structure gifts that provide benefits in the near term while meeting concerns that might otherwise preclude such gifts.

• Charitable Tool Box –  Irrevocable Gifts
  Prospects for major gifts are increasingly older individuals who are reluctant to make immediate gifts because of personal economic concerns. This session will introduce ways donors can make gifts over time while preserving financial security for themselves and their loved ones.
   
• Is the Grass Really Greener?

  There are more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations registered in the U.S.  Higher education only accounts for about 4,500 of these organizations. Who are the other organizations? What motivates donors to give to them?  What are the advantages and disadvantages of fundraising for educational institutions versus other philanthropic entities?

  This interactive session will combine industry data and experiences from two nonprofit leaders with experience in higher education fund development as well as a number of other sectors within the nonprofit community.   Join us for an active discussion of why donors give to different charities, how you can better understand your place in a donor’s philanthropic priorities and how you may increase results by partnering with other nonprofits where appropriate.

  Prospects for major gifts are increasingly older individuals who are reluctant to make immediate gifts because of personal economic concerns. This session will introduce ways donors can make gifts over time while preserving financial security for themselves and their loved ones.
   
• How to Work With Donors' Advisers to Facilitate Large Gifts
  The best laid plans can come to naught if fundraisers are not prepared to work effectively with one or more persons who may ultimately influence the way in which a gift is structured. Learn which advisers are most influential in various situations and how their compensation and other factors naturally inform their advice. With wealth increasingly owned by widows who may depend heavily on advice of counsel and family members, it is important to learn to understand and respect the role of these persons.
   

3:15–4:30
 Elective Sessions (choose one): 

• Philanthropy for the Modern Family
  America’s family structures and demographics continue to shift and change, but are philanthropic practices keeping up? It is more important than ever for mission driven organizations to be donor-centric. Do your current fundraising efforts seek to put donor needs first and reach the full spectrum of individuals who might support your institutions? Learn how to listen for the cues and clues that will help you understand not only a donor’s charitable interests but also family needs. Being able to find the intersection between the two will help you turn once reluctant donors into lifelong philanthropic partners.

• Collaboration in Action: Are We Competing or Completing?
  With increasing levels of uncertainty, ambiguity, and volatility across the philanthropic landscape, it is becoming critical to consider how fundraising teams are structured.

  Attendees will examine different organizational structures and performance metrics, then participate in a working session to explore what might work best for their teams. Leaders from different organizations will share and learn from one another with the goal of making their operating models more agile, modern, and donor-centric.

Where Do We Go From Here?
This session will summarize the content of the conference and address a number of practical steps that attendees can implement immediately and over time that will enhance their institution’s ability to complete more and larger gifts.  Special attention to how a widely anticipated economic downturn, proposed tax legislation, and the emergence of the “gerontrophilanthroplutocracy” offer unprecedented opportunities for those prepared to embrace and adapt to a new age of philanthropy.

The conference will conclude with a group discussion of the concepts presented in previous sessions. Participants will have the opportunity to raise issues for additional exploration or clarification in the context of their program and experience.
