Diversity is defined as the range of human differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs. We are a group of diverse individuals whose institutions have prioritized diversity and inclusion—and who understand that the landscape of Advancement forprofessionals of color and difference is in a period of great change. In this interactive session, we’ll take a look at the state of diversity in education and our profession, and explore what diversity means to YOU.
11:45 AM–1:15 PM Luncheon Table Discussion
1:15–2:15 Diversity: So What? Now What? We’ve built the case for diversity, equity and inclusion in the morning session by sharing the benefits of diversity (external), and you've articulated why diversity is personally important to YOU (internal). We’ve shared our intersectional selves.
So What? Diversity is America. It is a part of who we are. But as inevitable as diversity is, the reality is that racism and bias still exists. What is implicit bias? Research demonstrates that we can mitigate against our biases if we are vigilant and we persist.
Now What? We’ll conclude with takeaways and (battle) tactics for your workplace. How do we identify and use our strengths in dominant culture? How do we contribute to building a culture that will celebrate our authentic selves
