5 Tips to Become a Morning Person
If you like the idea of getting up earlier to accomplish more, consider these tactics to train yourself to become a morning person.
- Take a gradual approach. If your goal is to wake up at 5 a.m. and you normally get up at 7 a.m., ease into the new routine. For one week, get up at 6:30 a.m. The following week, wake up at 6 a.m., the next at 5:30 a.m. By the fourth week, you will feel more prepared to wake at 5 a.m.
- Prepare the night before. Make your morning routine as painless as possible. The night before, prepare for the morning by picking out your clothes and getting your coffee or tea ready to go.
- Manage your alarm clock. Put your alarm clock across the room so you must get up to turn it off. Don’t hit the snooze button.
- Plan something fun. You want to have something to get out of bed for—so plan something you will enjoy and that will put you in a calm frame of mind, such as a run, yoga, reading a book, meditating or praying, or walking the dog.
- Reframe negative thoughts. If you’re having difficulties falling asleep and find yourself anxious about not getting enough sleep, try positive affirmations. Instead of “I’m only going to get five hours of sleep”, try “My body is capable of miraculous things, including generating energy from five hours of restful sleep.”
