The CASE Advancement Internship seeks to broaden the pipeline and enhance diversity among future educational advancement professionals. This internship experience is designed to attract undergraduates, graduate students, and recent grads of diverse lived experiences who have the aptitude and skills to serve the profession but may not have previously considered a career in the educational advancement sector.

Since 2016, more than 750 interns from the US/Canada have had the opportunity to explore a career in advancement while obtaining hands-on advancement experience and professional development.

Hosts Provide

An eight-week summer internship (June 2-July 25, 2025), during which the advancement intern will undertake assignments and projects to develop their core advancement skills and help them develop professionally.

Fees

The fee to participate is $2,200 (US) per intern plus an intern stipend or hourly wage (determined by the institution).

The CASE participation fee covers the associated costs of the internship, including the hotel and meal expenses for the intern’s stay in Washington, D.C., for the three-day CASE Advancement Internship Conference.

Host institutions are responsible for covering the airfare for their intern(s) to attend the Advancement Internship Conference in Washington, D.C.

Hosts have the flexibility of providing their interns with a stipend or hourly wage stipend that is paid to CASE and then distributed to the intern or setting up compensation directly through the institution. Should you elect this option, CASE will distribute payment electronically to the intern during Week 4 and Week 8 of the internship.

Consider giving a student at your institution the summer of a lifetime to explore a career in advancement while doing meaningful work that will impact your institution!

If you are interested in becoming a host, don't hesitate to get in touch with Carl Simien, Director of Talent Management, at csimien@case.org

Frequently Asked Questions

As part of CASE’s commitment to helping its members grow and diversify the advancement pipeline, the CASE Advancement Internship seeks to increase and diversify the number of professionals in educational advancement. This internship is designed to attract students (undergraduate and graduate) and recent grads who may not have previously considered a career in educational advancement. Since 2016, more than six hundred fifty students and recent grads have participated in the internship, 60 percent of diverse backgrounds.

Through this career pipeline initiative, CASE directly partners with its members to identify talented students and develop their interest in an educational advancement career.

June 2 – July 25, 2025

*In special circumstances, an intern’s start and end dates can be adjusted to start earlier or finish later to accommodate a host institution’s schedule (i.e., for those on quarter systems.)

The host institution provides the following:

  • An eight-week paid internship. During which time, the CASE Advancement Intern will undertake assignments and projects that will develop their core advancement skills and help him or her to develop professionally
  • A designated staff person who will be both the intern and CASE’s main point of contact at the host site. This person is responsible for:
    • Coordinating with CASE on selecting the intern (Either internal or external candidate(s))
    • Planning projects for the intern
    • On boarding the intern at the start of the program
    • Supporting intern throughout internship as intern’s supervisor
  • A mentor at their host institution to guide their exploration of a career in advancement

During their eight weeks, CASE Advancement Interns receive:

  • Participation in introductory CASE advancement webinars and professional development seminars led by CASE volunteers in senior advancement and talent management roles
  • Matched up with a CASE member in field of interest for Zoom meetings throughout the internship
  • CASE student membership for one year after the internship, accessing complimentary CASE webinars, the CASE library and Career Central
  • Regular communication post-internship on entry-level job postings and career development opportunities

The fee to participate is $2,200 (U.S) fee per intern plus intern stipend or hourly wage (determined by institution).

The CASE participation fee covers the associated costs of the internship, including the hotel and meal expenses for the intern’s stay in Washington, DC, for the three-day CASE Advancement Internship Conference.

CASE recommends a $5,000 (US) stipend or $15 (US) an hour. We are starting to see some hosts increase the stipend to $5500/$6000 taking in factors such as if the internship is in person vs remote and geographical location.

The stipend or hourly wage will cover living expenses throughout the program. This program does not require hosts to provide or pay for housing, meals and/or transportation to and from your campus. Class credit can also be offered for an internship in lieu of a stipend or hourly wage.

Hosts have the flexibility of providing a $5,000 stipend that is paid to CASE and then distributed to the intern or setting up compensation directly through the institution. Should you elect this option, CASE will distribute wirelessly payment to the intern during Week 4 and Week 8 of the program.

Host institutions have the flexibility of selecting interns in three ways:

  1. You have the perfect student at your institution in mind for the position (i.e. current work study student, student caller, student volunteer)
  2. You can recruit and interview internally to select an intern from your institution
  3. You can recruit externally in which CASE will forward external applications for you to review and interview. External applicants will select as part of their application their top eight schools they would be interested in interning at should they be selected.

The online application closes on February 7, 2025, for external applicants. For those hosts selecting from external candidates, an e-mail will be sent the week of February 24 with all applications. Host institutions should plan on contacting those students you are interested in interviewing for phone interviews or video conferencing.

The deadline to select your intern(s) and share this information with CASE is March 31, 2025.

If you decide to recruit internally, applicants do not need to apply through CASE’ application. All we need is the name of your selected intern and the intern’s contact information by March 31st.

*Sample applications for recruiting internally are available.

Absolutely! Some of our host institutions choose to do two or more, further enriching the experience.

No. CASE does not require host institutions to provide or pay for housing, meals and/or transportation to and from your campus. Some hosts do provide housing and meal cards as an additional benefit for the intern. Many hosts will put their selected intern in contact with departments on their campus that may be able to assist the intern in finding online housing.

CASE staff will work with the point person you’ve designated and the intern to make their onboarding into the program seamless. CASE will provide the intern with an official acceptance letter, resources to begin their internship and require a mandatory webinar for all interns to participate in prior to their internship in which we will review what to expect, professional code of conduct, etc.

The host institution will prepare the interns for their first day, finalize project(s), equipment if needed, and office space. We have a collection of onboarding sample materials from previous hosts available for 2025 hosts to view.

Absolutely! We have many hosts who have participated for multiple years. We’re happy to share contact information if you’d like to connect with past hosts and hear about their overall experience, including how they selected their intern, projects they assigned, and opportunities they provided to enhance the intern’s understanding and excitement for the profession.

All you need to do is commit. It’s that simple. Once you commit to hosting an intern, CASE will send you our host online intake form to get more information, including your stipend/hourly wage, whether your internships will be remote/in-person, type of projects, etc. To host your CASE Advancement Intern, contact Carl Simien, Director of Talent Management, at +1 (202)478-5607 or csimien@case.org
