5 Tricks to Keep Your Attention in Meetings
Need help staying focused in meetings? Try these tips to stay alert and engaged.
- Write it down. Even if someone else is the designated notetaker, taking your own notes can keep your brain active. You can use a pen and paper, laptop, or digital notepad. Some people find that doodling helps them focus. (Just be discreet.) If you remember something unrelated to the meeting—like an item you need at the grocery store—write a note to yourself to get it out of your head.
- Reduce phone distractions. Put your phone face down and set it on Do Not Disturb.
- Bring a drink or chew something minty. Sipping a drink—especially one that is cold—can make you more alert. Drinks with caffeine can give you an extra boost. Minty flavors also can wake you up.
- Use fidget toys. There are plenty of small fidget toys. Just be discreet—use them under a table or off screen in a video call, so your fidget toys are not a distraction to others.
- Take advantage of video-call flexibility. Are you working from home and spending a good part of your day on video meetings? This situation may give you some flexible options for keeping alert. Some people find that knitting or crocheting, coloring in coloring books, or doing origami can keep them focused during video calls. If you find yourself getting sleepy, turn off your camera briefly to get up and stretch, walk around for a minute or two, or grab a drink. Another healthy option is adding an under-desk bike pedal exerciser.
