WASHINGTON, D.C. - Two transformative foundation leaders who have built a strong culture of philanthropy on their campuses while instilling a commitment to diversity in their organizations are the 2019 recipients of the CASE Commonfund Institutionally Related Foundation Awards.

Dexter A. Bailey, Jr., executive director of the Stony Brook Foundation, and Barbara Breier, executive director of the Texas State University Development Foundation, will be recognized for their contributions at the 2019 CASE Annual Conference for Institutionally Related Foundations, April 3-5, in San Diego.

Institutionally related foundations are nonprofit organizations that cultivate and manage private assets to support the missions of the colleges and universities with which they are affiliated. These prestigious awards recognize professionals who have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement, quality and effectiveness of their foundations and the sector.

Bailey, who has 25 years of experience in educational advancement, was appointed senior vice president for advancement and executive director of the Stony Brook Foundation in 2011. Under his leadership, Stony Brook University has increased annual fundraising from $41 million to $90 million annually and launched and completed a $630 million dollar campaign, the largest campaign in the history of the State University of New York (system). In addition, Bailey has strengthened the Stony Brook Foundation by diversifying the foundation board, introducing dean's councils for every college and school at the institution, hiring the foundation's first chief investment officer and by introducing and leveraging data & analytics to guide the foundation's work.

In his letter of support, Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. wrote: "Dexter Bailey has transformed a large and complex organization in a highly regulated environment, through outstanding recruiting, creating a culture of accountability, rewarding excellence, and innovative approaches to many of the key problems confronting public universities. And he has done this while becoming a part of the fabric of Stony Brook University, a respected and trusted leader who is recognized as a powerful champion for what is right and good about public higher education."

Breier, who has more than 30 years of experience in higher education advancement, became vice president for university advancement and executive director of the Texas State University Development Foundation in 2011. Highlights of her accomplishments at Texas State University include her leadership in closing the institution's Pride in Action campaign which raised $152 million ($42 million over goal), the establishment of an endowment compliance program which has significantly increased utilization of available endowment funds from 64% in FY2013 to 95% in FY2017 and the development of the foundation's first strategic plan to help drive and fund the university's next campaign.

In his letter of support, former Texas State University Development Foundation Board Chair James S. Taylor wrote, "Dr. Breier's creativity, strategic mindset and organizational knowledge and skills have all been instrumental in helping Texas State University achieve the kind of transformative change necessary to become a national research university."

Both Bailey and Breier are active members of CASE and have spoken at numerous CASE conferences.
