CASE Statement in Response to U.S. Supreme Court Ruling on Race-Conscious Admissions
WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 29, 2023 – CASE today released the following statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. President & Fellows of Harvard College and Students for Fair Admissions vs. University of North Carolina.
CASE President and CEO Sue Cunningham:
“It has long been our position that individual higher education institutions are best positioned to determine how to build diverse, thriving communities. We were proud to join an amicus brief in collaboration with the American Council on Education and other higher education associations in support of affirming the use of race-conscious admissions in the cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.
We are disappointed in the Supreme Court’s decision to eliminate the use of race-conscious admissions. Colleges and universities across the U.S. will be processing this decision and determining how they will continue a commitment to a diverse student body within new legal strictures. We deeply affirm our core belief that regardless of institutional size, history, location and focus, a student population that represents the amazing diversity of this country provides the very best experiences and opportunities for all students. CASE stands ready to partner with our member institutions to assist their advancement programs and staff teams in navigating this new era.
We will continue the crucial work of advancing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging through our Opportunity and Inclusion Center, which is dedicated to driving change and providing social justice solutions that will advance education to transform lives and provide educational attainment for all. We encourage any advancement professionals who are struggling with today’s news to reach out to us for support.”
