Congress Passes Key Funding for Minority-Serving Institutions
On Dec. 10, the U.S. House and Senate passed the Fostering Undergraduate Talent by Unlocking Resources for Education (FUTURE) Act (H.R. 5363), a bipartisan bill that provides key funding for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Tribal Colleges and Universities and Other Minority-Serving Institutions. President Trump is expected to sign the legislation shortly.
H.R. 5363 amends Title III of the Higher Education Act to permanently provide $255 million in annual funding for MSIs, funding that had expired on Sept. 30. This funding allows MSIs to build institutional capacity and prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Additionally, the bill streamlines the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and allows the Internal Revenue Service to share some tax data with the U.S. Department of Education to simplify the application process for students.
CASE joined with our higher education association colleagues on a letter in support of the FUTURE Act. You can read more about the final bill on the UNCF website.
