How to Help Gen Z Thrive in the Workplace
A recent survey revealed what Generation Z values and what makes them happy. Consider these factors for early-career professionals in your workplace.
Sponsored by the Walton Family Foundation and conducted in November 2023, the survey revealed the following about what Gen Z values:
- Purpose. The survey found that having a purpose is the most important factor for happiness among Gen Z. Those Gen Zers who say they are very or somewhat happy also say they feel they do something interesting every day, are motivated to go to school or work, and that the things they do at work or school are important.
- Sleep and relaxation. Gen Zers who have enough time to sleep and relax are twice as likely to say they are happy.
- Connection. Happy members of Gen Z are at least twice as likely to say they feel loved, supported by, and connected to those around them.
Overall, Gen Zers say they are somewhat or very happy, but it’s worth noting that this number dropped as they entered adulthood, from 80 percent (12 to 14 years old) to 68 percent (24 to 26 years old). Other significant findings are that older Gen Zers who are married, have children, and/or have at least a bachelor’s degree report the highest levels of happiness.
One negative effect on Gen Z happiness—perhaps a result of social media—is spending a lot of time comparing oneself to others. Gen Zers who admitted to doing this were notably less likely to say they are happy and are about twice as likely to report feeling often or always anxious.
If you are in Gen Z, prioritize sleep, get-togethers with friends, and relaxing activities, and consider spending less time on social media. Seek out assignments at work that will challenge you, even taking you beyond your comfort zone.
If you’re managing Gen Z staff, assign them projects that keeps them engaged and learning and will have a meaningful impact on your institution. Gen Z workers are attracted to employers who offer a good work-life balance. Since personal connections add to Gen Z happiness, consider work arrangements and activities that foster strong relationships, and even friendships, among team members.
