A California School Provides a Safe Haven for Ukrainian Students
From his office on the campus of Dunn School, Head of School Kalyan Balaven can look out the window and see his students at play. On a recent fall afternoon, he sees two brothers, refugees from the war in Ukraine, laughing with their classmates—almost as if they are carefree. He chokes up recalling how they arrived at the school with their heads down, bearing the trauma they endured witnessing the horrors of war.
Now, in the safety of their school community, they can look up.
