Sports Superstar Shares 5 Leadership Lessons
To boost team performance, try these leadership techniques recommended by one famous athlete.
Tom Brady is an American former professional football player who won more Super Bowls than any other quarterback and was elected team captain for the Patriots 18 times. Here are some lessons he learned on leadership and teamwork, from an article that he co-wrote recently for the Harvard Business Review.
- The team always comes first. Even when things don’t go your way—for example, you are passed over for a promotion—continue to support your team as you work to prove yourself. The success of a team is never the result of one person, but from dozens of factors. Recruiting people of good character, practicing discipline, identifying deficiencies, preparing for any scenario, and learning from mistakes are key factors that lead to success.
- Show appreciation for overlooked colleagues. Some team members might be more visible than others, perhaps because of their personalities or their roles. Make a point of giving credit to your unsung heroes. On a successful team, everyone needs to feel valued, and it’s up to leaders to make that happen.
- Create a culture of 100% effort. Communicating expectations upfront and offering constructive feedback that doesn’t seem like an attack can encourage team members to put out more effort. Team members holding each other accountable to higher standards—not just what is expected—is another way to encourage excellence.
- Recognize the best way to motivate each person. Not everyone is motivated by the same things. Great leaders recognize the “motivational levers” for each team member—whether it’s money, recognition, or winning.
- Nurture personal relationships. The better your personal relationships are with your team members, the better you will work together. There is value in experiences both inside and outside the office that encourage people to get to know each other better—retreats, happy hours, parties, and other social events.
