Trump Administration’s FY19 Budget Includes Cuts to Key Higher Education Programs
U.S.President Donald Trump's fiscal year 2019 budget proposes cuts to programs critical to colleges and universities.
The blueprint, entitled An American Budget, outlines the Trump administration's spending priorities for the fiscal year 2019 federal budget. The blueprint includes cuts to programs affecting higher education, including:
- $3.6 billion reduction (5 percent) in funding for the U.S. Department of Education
- Elimination of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program
- Elimination of Americorps, the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities
The Trump Administration was planning to cut funding for the National Institutes of Health and that National Science Foundation in its FY19 but ended up keeping funding flat after Congress passed and President Trump signed a budget deal that increased the caps on domestic discretionary spending.
While the blueprint sets out President Trump's priorities, Congress will ultimately shape the final FY19 budget says Brian Flahaven, senior director of advocacy for CASE. Given the recent budget deal, lawmakers are unlikely to seek the cuts recommended in the Administration budget.
