From the Judges' Report
- The challenge of writing news releases for science and medicine is two-fold: make the subject understandable and relatable to the average audience. The submissions from the University of Washington clearly met both challenges. Each of the releases benefited from a strong lede that immediately grabbed the interest of this reviewer. The range of subjects presented in the package of releases created the sense that the institution is a leader in a wide range of scientific research.
- These news stories covered a wide range of topics, were well written and enjoyable. They relied a little too much on long -- for news stories -- feature ledes, but still remained within what is considered news writing.
- Detail rich, interesting topics, well written. The writing often was compelling. Staff inject contemporary touches with which readers can identify, at least superficially, and that helps pull readers further into the stories. Nice use of graphics.
