About the entry
From the Judges' Report
- What set the winning submission apart was its powerful writing and consistency of quality. Each article submitted by Stanford (Stanford Medicine Magazine) was compelling and masterfully written, and surpassed the expectations set by the judging criteria of superior writing style, organization, and careful editing; creative story ideas and development; and an understanding of the institution's mission and ability to communicate that mission through imaginative writing.
- As judges, we were moved by the stories portrayed, as well as the way in which they were told. All of the submitted articles are powerfully written, drawing in the reader and immerse him/her into the story. The writing met the difficult task of relaying complex medical and scientific ideas clearly and concisely, in a way that appeals to both lay readers and a professional audience, and did so while drawing readers in with compelling writing that emphasizes the human aspect behind the science. The articles demonstrated "how" Stanford is on the forefront of medical education, research, and development, yet each story was written with a focus on the human perspective-which demonstrates the "why." Each author/editor seemed to be relentless with word choice, displaying an ability to emerge him/herself fully in the topic and then carefully crafting the language so that the reader is also immersed in the story. Details were curated so that only the most pertinent are translated, keeping the reader engaged without getting lost in or dragged down by the details.
- An overall standout, Stanford set the gold standard with its Stanford Medicine Magazine Staff Writing submission and truly earned the Gold.
