Building a Stronger Haiti with Chocolate
About the entry
Three years ago, University of Michigan engineering alumna Corinne Joachim Sanon left a six-figure career in the U.S. to return to Haiti and start Les Chocolateries Askanya, the first bean-to-bar chocolate operation in her home country. She knew the venture would be grueling and would pay, at best, a fraction of what she had earned in industry. But she was determined to build an engine for jobs and a blueprint for success, showing that it's possible for Haitians to build successful small businesses in Haiti.
From the Judges' Report
A genuinely fascinating story that pulls the reader in from the start. Effective design with powerful images and video truly enhance the reader’s experience, providing a strong sense of place. This impressive piece of long-form journalism profiling a University graduate using her education to improve the world would be at home in a publication such as the New York Times. Great work.
