Fighting to Be Who He Is: A Transgender Teen Finds Help on a Difficult Journey
About the entry
Dani was born female but by age 4, an age at which most children have an established sense of their gender identity, he knew he wasn't a girl. As Dani grew older and entered adolescence, his parents noticed he was becoming withdrawn and sad. They sought help, first from a therapist who helped them understand that Dani was transgender, and later from the care team at the Stanford Children's Health Pediatric and Adolescent Gender Clinic. The video follows Dani and his family as he embarks on his gender transition, changing his name and starting testosterone shots.
From the Judges' Report
Compelling and compassionate, the story of Dani – a transgender teen who was born female but is transitioning to male – captures both the attendant humanity and the heartache. The video frames Dani’s struggles and joys as part of the broader issue of gender research and care of transgender patients for which Stanford Medicine is at the forefront. An in-depth magazine story bolstered the video coverage.
