Standing Up for Charlottesville
About the entry
On Aug. 11-12, white supremacists committed murder and other acts of violence in Charlottesville during the summer, including entering UVA's campus with torches and threatening the lives, well-being and peace of mind of the learning community Thomas Jefferson founded. As a leading voice in the university community, UVA's law school said without equivocation that we are together as one.
From the Judges' Report
Judges were impressed at how the University of Virginia School of Law boldly tackled issues raised by the white supremacist march on the University of Virginia campus. The effort extended beyond the days following the march to encompass a year-long program of events, speakers and debates and included features in the alumni magazine and social media activity. Judges liked how the institution embraced the role of thought leadership and adapted their plan to tackle issues that arose after the march, such as the debate over removal of Confederate statues.
