Wider Horizons
About the entry
Wider Horizons is unusual for an alumni magazine in that, in addition to being mailed to a list of about 19,500 alumni, government, advisory groups, donors, friends and local businesses and being circulated around campus, each issue is also packaged and distributed with about 19,000 issues of Lethbridge Living, a bimonthly city magazine that appears on newsstands and racks around the region and is delivered to targeted homes.
From the Judges' Report
The panel concurred that Wider Horizons meets the goals of Lethbridge College for communicating with its audience in a high quality and cost-effective manner. We were particularly impressed by how the magazine manages to convey a sense of place and is highly inclusive of all stakeholders in the college, showcasing the breadth of cultural diversity in its region. Panelists commented on the substantial and intentional use of content to highlight key programs and program impact and to recognize student achievement both in the short and long term.
Panelists were particularly impressed with the quality of feature photography and illustrations, visual storytelling (bird’s eye and bug’s eye views), and the staff’s innovative way of featuring a new facility in progress. The design allows the visuals to breathe and allots sufficient white space. The overall information architecture is strong.
The only suggestion the panel had was that the team could have called out the 60th anniversary more explicitly on the masthead, as the logo is somewhat difficult to read and it was not clear from the cover that the issue contained many special features. That said, the features were well done and the use of drawings for illustration instead of photography (which can be of variable quality) provided a cohesive visual impression for the feature.
Congratulations on a well-deserved award!
