Bowdoin Magazine
From the Nominator
The spring/summer 2018 and fall 2018 issues of Bowdoin Magazine represent the second and third issues of our redesign. Our new look and feel better connects our readers to Bowdoin’s mission and spirit, the college’s aspirations, and its past as well as its future. The new design and creative process behind it has given us a more effective platform for compelling narratives, powerful visuals, and a personal touch reflective of Bowdoin’s close-knit community.
From the Judges
One judge’s comment that Bowdoin Magazine “just feels fresh,” while looking at the fall 2018 issue’s velvety green cover with a crisp, leafy head of lettuce on it, gets straight to the point: The design and photography of this magazine does exactly what it’s supposed to do, and it works. Judges found the magazine takes full advantage of bright, bold colors (like a page that’s filled mostly with cucumber slices), white space, photography, and clever illustration (like a lighthearted, two-page map that tells the story of an alumna’s seven marathons on as many continents in as many days). The magazine’s features, telling stories like the “secret history” of magnetism and first-person accounts of the choices made by members of the Class of 1968, could have been intended for (and enjoyed by) anyone whose hands found the magazine.
