A story about a gay, nonbinary Asian social media star who uses YouTube and Instagram to explore identity. This spread uses color, space and design to explore identity with him. The design emphasizes the identity of a marginalized person—giving him full pages to express himself. Our research found that nonbinary people generally believe the media covers them in exploitative, hateful or sensationalist ways. “Show us as real people,” one commenter said, “with the same dignity and respect as gender binary people.” Our goal was to do just that, and more: to view this person as special, wonderful, deserving of attention and praise.
From the Judges
The uniqueness of this design really stood out among the entries. The design was beautiful and visually arresting with gorgeous photography. The design was paired with artistic restraint on the copy, and purposeful use of white space. The photo compositions and color palette played well with the typography and call outs. The simplicity of the design drew the reader towards the fabulous photography. Too often we see great photos and design squished into a layout with too much text. This was not the case for this entry.
