From the Nominator
A simple but striking editorial illustration by Gerard DuBois for a feature, "What Would You Do?," about how, despite living as neighbors for hundreds of years, Ukrainians, and Poles helped Germans slaughter some 10,000 Jews in a small Eastern Europe town during World War II.
From the Judges
This piece was a favorite of all six judges. We loved the use of white space. Very powerful image, provocative, haunting. The image works well with the typography, especially the way the words are "sitting" on platforms, like a person might. We loved how the light was shining on the person in front. A brave and clever way to show a concept that is otherwise hard to illustrate: complicity. We all agreed we wanted to read this story even though we have no connection to the school.
