Let’s Be Clear
From the Nominator
“Let’s Be Clear” enables UCF to be transparent about Title IX concerns, to promote the responsibility for faculty and staff to come forward about incidents, and to strengthen a culture that does not tolerate assault, discrimination or harassment. By opening a new way to communicate — texting to contact an advocate — we have already seen an increase in reporting numbers. The increase doesn’t necessarily mean more incidents; rather, it represents an increased knowledge of how to disclose and the desire to do so through a modern method. In 2018, UCF received 614 text messages through the texting platform. Considering that victim advocates average about 500 contacts per year, this number is especially impressive. “Let’s Be Clear” messaging appeared on vinyl stickers and mirror clings in bathrooms, on a shuttle bus and bus shelters, and on giveaways such as shirts, water bottles and clear bags.
From the Judges
The judges felt that this comprehensive campaign offered an impressive array of digital and physical products to drive the message home to a campus of more than 68,000 students. They took a sensitive, complicated issue and created a strong statement that made it clear where the university stood on the issue. What really made this entry stand out was the use of texting as a reporting mechanism, showing an understanding of the way that most people, particularly students, communicate today.
