In the Lion's Den
From the Nominator
Illustrator Julia Rothman created an intimate profile of Michael Garrett, who was the Columbia Lions mascot as an undergrad and has subsequently spent the past 30 years collecting lions. His house in Brooklyn consists of two floors of lion objects—from sculptures and paintings to ties and furniture, and even a working lion toilet. Rothman playfully illustrates these objects and what it means to be a singular collector.
From the Judges
Judges loved the old-school, New Yorker-style look, and all agreed that the piece was more charming this way, and it's a style you don't see often (ever?) in alumni magazines. Great idea to use illustration over photography for this—the illustration really made the piece. Typeface was great and the handwritten style worked well. Fun, clever. Definitely makes you want to read the text. We thought this was a great way to get into someone's story. Thank you for sharing this!
