Oberlin Alumni Magazine
From the Nominator
These two issues of the Oberlin Alumni Magazine capture the richly textured nature and culture of Oberlin College, from the whimsical to the profound, sometimes in one article. For several years our magazine has included poetry in each issue and, more recently, we’ve begun including carefully chosen recipes from expert chefs, bakers, and even seaweed harvesters. Like everything in our magazine, they’re not for everyone, and we’re good with that. In fact, we think the magazine is good because of that.
From the Judges
The Oberlin Alumni Magazine staff brought it all together: good photography and graphics, as well as features that are well-written and of interest to non-alumni. Special kudos on the article, "The Apartment Therapist Will See You," a great message from a successful alum presented in an eye-catching way.
Oberlin's magazine suggests an institution that is smart and confident. There's excellent illustration, typography, and design. Love Maxwell Ryan! Excellent photography (judges loved the time-lapse photos for the ice breaker article) and generally excellent layout. The drawing cover for the spring issue is very clean and a nice break from traditional covers.
