“Regale Us,” by Anna Miller, Tufts Magazine, Spring 2018
From the Nominator
Anna Miller is a staff photographer for Tufts University, covering four campuses and contributing to the university’s seven magazines, daily news site, and social media channels. She is driven to craft compelling stories and the capture heart of the community—whether she is covering news, a NCAA championship game, creating stylized portrait shoots of breakthrough researchers in their laboratories, or developing story ideas that highlight the personality, vitality and stories of the Tufts community. In brainstorming new and unique ways to cover and celebrate the annual ritual of graduation, she came up with the idea to photograph nine Tufts professors in their academic regalia and get the stories behind the distinctive garb to create an eight-page photo essay in Tufts Magazine. It also appeared on the Tufts Commencement 2017 website, as well as on Tufts Facebook and Instagram.
From the Judges
Although the technical aspect of these shots had flaws, the simple strength of these portraits was at once energetic, and reverent, showcasing the regalia as artistic expression, and calling remarkable attention to the specific and ornate academic garb. We will look more closely at the next commencement.
