Teaching’s Diversity Problem
From the Nominator
Photography by Jackie Ricciardi. This was a portrait taken of BU Professor Travis Bristol, who is advocating to have more black, male teachers. The purpose of the photo was to show him in an educational setting, feeling somewhat isolated.
From the Judges
The judges felt strongly that the technical quality and creative approach of this photo raises the bar for university photography. The photo is beautifully executed and compelling with a “stop, look, and wonder” impact. Typical photography shows teachers with students and with learning materials used prominently or in the background. This photo is captivating because a person of color is in a classroom, but even though he is not speaking, standing, pointing, or moving, it is understood that he is a teacher. Sitting in the back of the classroom, surrounded by empty seats, it evokes a strong feeling of isolation. There's a loneliness and longing in the teacher’s expression. The color of his argyle sweater and striped socks pop against the elegance of the soft blue tones and subtle shadows.
