Walking Together: The Impact of Annual Giving on Faculty
From the Nominator
Professor of Sociology Matthew Desmond's groundbreaking work on eviction is changing the national conversation about housing insecurity. Support from alumni, parents, and friends through the 2016-17 Annual Giving campaign helped the university recruit talented new faculty members like Desmond, and provided funding for research initiatives like Desmond's Eviction Lab, the first nationwide database of evictions.
From the Judges
Great example of an annual fund video. Excellent example of faculty making a difference. Very tastefully done: strong editing, good use of photography, color, pacing. With 82 entries, this was a very competitive category. Entries that were recognized by awards were distinguished by their clear messages, effective narrative storytelling, sincerity, and authentic sense of place. Overall, those entries that emerged as most noteworthy were those with clear purpose, straightforward messaging, strong storytelling, a singular institutional voice, and distinctive identity: that is, you could not necessarily replace the name of the institution with any other. The panel encourages all entrants in this category to share their work widely, as we learned something from each one of these videos, regardless of whether we were able to recognize them with an award.
