The Alumni Bridge

The bridge at the main ceremonial gates of University College Cork is well known to students and alumni. Students start their UCC journey by crossing the bridge, similarly they leave the university via the same bridge equipped to challenge and engage the world as alumni. Their connection to UCC as alumni is symbolised by the bridge. Fifty alumni, one from each of the classes from each of the last 50 years (1969-2019), processed to this iconic UCC bridge for a ceremony where the bridge was named "Alumni Bridge." The event brought together the rolling out of a new name, visual identity and tag line for Alumni and Development UCC, of which the key motif of this new visual identity is a graphical portrayal of the bridge. This event also coincided with the 90th anniversary of the building of the bridge. The social media strategy looked to increase engagement and reach new accounts organically, to spread awareness of the Alumni and Development UCC brand and mission. This was achieved by utilising creative and compelling multi-media content with effective story telling.
From the Judges
This was a compelling project. UCC gave their alumni and school community an opportunity to engage through emotional connections to a beloved structure on their campus. Every member of the school’s community has his/her own memory of the bridge, and now they share this memory—created by the school—with each other. The YouTube video was outstanding! It pulls at the heartstrings from the opening shot, and really captures the significance of this campus structure. This project also shows great collaboration and organization.
