Building on Tradition: A New Approach to MCLA’s President’s Report
From the Nominator
The Marketing and Communications office assembled a campus committee to help provide feedback and new ideas for the 2018-19 MCLA President's Report. Though our audience is primarily donors and friends of the college, we wanted to make sure that the people who study and work here had as much input into our 2018-19 report as possible—not just to feed us story ideas, but to offer ideas about design, theme, and process. We convened a 12-person committee representing all divisions at MCLA, including current students. Armed with that information and with more participation from our community, we made a dedicated effort to produce a report reflecting that feedback. The report is also the first major printed piece reflecting MCLA’s new branding. With a theme celebrating MCLA’s 125th anniversary, we were able to create a concise, interesting, and visually engaging report while also cutting down on our printing costs and general budget by $10,000. We also took a new approach to posting the report online, using ISSUU and sending a card directing people to view it on the website.
From the Judges
With the Building on Tradition, President’s Report 2018-19, MCLA marked its 125 anniversary, and the report is a mash up of the past and present. This is retrospective piece that has good narrative flow and doesn't overwhelm. They made a conscious decision to cut back on content, particularly text, and that choice seems to have served them well. There is no lack of faces or feeling of community, and the theme carries through nicely. We enjoyed the combination of the funky 1970ish font and use of duotones combined with the more contemporary treatments. Judges comments included “Concise, but not spare, great use of color throughout the piece,” and “Old photos woven into new images, to reflect the changes over the school's 125 years. Very effective.”
