College of Liberal Arts THiNK Magazine
From the Nominator
The Purdue University College of Liberal Arts magazine, THiNK, prints each fall and showcases the many unique accomplishments of its faculty, students, and alumni. This issue shows off these diverse offerings, starting with the cover art created by a faculty member who participated in the “Return to Entry” exhibition where artists found inspiration in astronaut Neil Armstrong’s personal papers that are housed at the Purdue archives. It also features a Q&A with the great-great niece of one of Purdue’s earliest female faculty members, a world-renowned ceramicist; a feature on a communication alumnae who became a certified miner while working as a safety researcher for the CDC; a series of vignettes on the college’s most recent Fulbright recipients; and a story about a Catholic-Buddhist housing partnership in three major U.S. cities that resulted from an interreligious conference a retired philosophy professor organized for the Vatican.
From the Judges
THiNK Magazine, upon first glance, looks like your typical literary magazine, but when you open past the cover, what you see is colorful, innovative, and extremely inclusive. The judges were impressed with how the magazine breaks the stereotype of perhaps what the magazine was in the past. THiNK Magazine also balances featuring the present and the past, current students, alumni and benefactors. It easily speaks to all of these audiences and accomplishes their goal of reaching a wide variety of audiences, many of whom may not have picked up the magazine in the past.
