Harvard Law Bulletin: Bringing Slavery's Legacy to Light, One Story at a Time
From the Nominator
A feature story that aims to capture the impact of the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama, which are the creations of Harvard Law School alumnus Bryan Stevenson, death row advocate, author of “Just Mercy” and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative. Since opening in April 2018, the museum and memorial, as well as Stevenson, had been featured in many of the country’s top publications. The challenge for the article in the Bulletin to come out in 2019 was to find a narrative approach that would add something new and do justice to Stevenson’s powerful vision. Journalist Cara Solomon had the inspiration to write about Stevenson’s creation through the lens of four people in Alabama whose lives answered the question of why this museum and monument are needed.
