Medicine@Brown
From the Nominator
Medicine@Brown is the alumni magazine of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. It is published three times a year and distributed to alumni, faculty, parents of medical students, staff, and key local partners. For nearly 20 years, the alumni magazine for the Warren Alpert Medical School was known as Brown Medicine. In 2018, we were presented with a challenge: the faculty internal medicine practice was renaming itself Brown Medicine. We saw this inconvenient development as an opportunity—we could relaunch the magazine, under a new name, with a similar but better-defined mission and a complete redesign. It had been more than 10 years since the magazine's last redesign, so the time was right. In the midst of all this change, there was one constant; some might call it a brand positioning statement, a guiding principle, or a mantra. For us, it was what we taped to the whiteboard in our office so that we would constantly be reminded to stop and make sure every decision comported with this core statement. It was simple and yet powerful: The purpose of Medicine@Brown is to remind alumni [or faculty, or students] why they went into medicine in the first place and why they are proud they did it at Brown.
From the Judges
Although institutional and somewhat conventional in its vision, the publication of Brown's Medical School has been made substantially more modern, more focused, and more compelling by its redesign. Cohesive in both look and voice, the result is smart and distinguished. We especially like the fresh take on the campus photo, which relies on expressive photography to establish the magazine's aesthetic as well as tether it to its institution.
