The relatively new Development and Alumni Relations team of 10 staff at Aberystwyth University grew fundraising from an annual baseline average of £120,000 in 2017 to a two year total of £12.3 million by 2019, at direct costs of only £154,000. The team was instrumental in securing further matched funding of £7 million from Statutory Funds towards the £27.6 million capital appeal to transform Old College, the university's first building and site of the first university in Wales, by the University's 150th anniversary in 2023. The team achieved this during a period of reduced budgets, recruitment freezes, and major capacity building challenges and concerns on the impact of the UK's new data protection legislation and Fundraising Regulator.
