Sarasota Art Museum Gala
From the Nominator
The Sarasota Art Museum opened in December 2019 in Sarasota, Florida. Repurposing the former Sarasota High School, an M. Leo Elliot design, this long awaited contemporary art museum contains 15,000 square feet of dedicated exhibition gallery space, a bistro, shop, auditorium for educational events and performances, a sculpture courtyard, and extensive grounds and facilities where one can engage with site-specific and site responsive art experiences. An extension of the Ringling College of Art and Design campus, our talented student artists in cooperation with our design center and executive director and museum curator, created this colorful, contemporary invitation that pays homage to the uniqueness of not only the event, but the newly created space and what it represents for the Sarasota community. We wanted the invitation to be as distinct as the gala event and museum.
From the Judges
The use of strong pattern, bold contrasts in limited punches of color, and the restrained use of type made this piece both strong and elegant and representative of an event heralding the opening of a new museum of contemporary art. It served as an excellent vehicle to tease the launch of the museum's new logo while not "giving it away" before the event. Very bold. Very nice.
