Smart Factory Grand Opening
From the Nominator
Red River College recently opened its new Smart Factory, an applied research space, experiential learning facility, and technology demonstration site. The grand opening brought together representatives from the college, the federal government, industry partners and community members for an interactive experience. More than 100 guests (some who brought their children) came to learn more about the various robots and technology housed within the Smart Factory, and were dazzled by the feature event—a ribbon cutting ceremony performed by Baxter, one of RRC's Robots-In-Residence. After the formal event, research members of the Technology Access Centre for Aerospace and Manufacturing gave live demonstrations of the various equipment.
From the Judges
This event was clearly trying to serve the unique needs of their community and to promote the skilled workforce. Skilled trades are in demand in their area (Manitoba). It was evident that they were trying to do a lot with minimal resources. Clear goals and outcomes defined. Innovative approach to physically cutting the ribbon - added a special and memorable component to the event. Effective use of staff resources to execute on the development of the event as well as the cultivation of further stewardship.
