Sustainable Earth
From the Nominator
In autumn 2019, the University of Cambridge launched a Sustainable Earth campaign to highlight the university's research around the climate crisis and moving toward a zero carbon future, as well as measures the university itself has been taking to reduce its carbon footprint. The campaign was promoted through the "Spotlight" focus in our newly designed Horizons magazine, published in November, and long-form multimedia articles were published on the university website and amplified through social media.
From the Judges
This ambitious project not only makes the case for what changes are needed in Cambridge and everywhere else (if we are to avert a climate disaster), it also offers a lengthy and accessible blueprint that other colleges and universities could choose to follow. As one judge commented, “The goal of this package is nothing short of changing the world. The breadth of the topic is overwhelming but the writing is engaging, concise and thoughtful.” The stories are bolstered by strong research, useful infographics, solutions-oriented reporting and some hopeful, optimistic takes from heavy hitters like David Attenborough and Jane Goodall. The Cambridge Zero and Cambridge Green sections, a judge noted, each “seemed almost as if they could have been a series all of their own.”
