UM Today The Magazine
From the Nominator
UM Today The Magazine underwent a dramatic redesign in 2015 to establish itself as the University of Manitoba’s signature publication, and a key tool to engage alumni and donors. Recognizing the need to continuously evolve, increase readership and align with a changing university brand, we adjusted our approach for our spring and fall 2019 issues. In the spring issue, we opted for stories tackling topics that are conversation starters, to further engage our readers in important dialogue—for example, white privilege and how that affects reconciliation in Canada. We quietly only ran female voices in this issue as well, without broadcasting the move, as acknowledgement of the inequality that still exists and in honour of our new chancellor, the second woman since 1887 to hold this role at UM. For the fall issue, we embarked on a more visual re-fresh, by implementing a cover concept redesign in support of our launch of a new brand for the university.
From the Judges
Smart and lively collection of content delivered in a seamless and compelling way. Stunning photography, terrific headlines, well-written articles on important, edgy topics, with beautiful covers and design. This magazine has a lovely texture in both its immersive writing and visual storytelling. As an example, the piece on the burn doctor/patient is both moving and respectful.
