University of Toronto Magazine, Spring 2019
From the Nominator
We think of the University of Toronto Magazine as a “backstage pass” for alumni to the university’s brightest minds. The Spring 2019 issue took a more overtly supportive role with respect to fundraising, with most of the content dedicated to the successful conclusion of the university’s seven-year Boundless campaign, which raised more than $2.6 billion. The magazine was central to the university’s efforts to thank alumni for their contributions and to make them aware both of the campaign’s immense impact and the need for continued support.
From the Judges
The judges agreed that this was the most compelling way to cover a campaign in a publication: by thanking and stating the reasons they are grateful demonstrates impact. The connections to the campaign and fundraising were seamless. The clean design with the big, bold photographs, illustrations and custom hand-lettering was striking. One judge compared the design to The New Yorker. The story on depression in older adults was particularly fascinating.
