From the Nominator
Fred “Honey Pot” Williams is a 60-year-old gastroenterologist who earned his nickname because he’s a beekeeper. The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine graduate likes gardening and mountain biking, and is devoted to fitness and a plant-based diet. A veteran of adventure races, marathons and any other event that requires being outside and sweating, Williams claims he’s in the best shape of his life. By evidence of his push-up prowess, he just might be. Our features delves into Williams’ life and philosophy as we race along with writer and subject on an eight-hour adventure race.
From the Judges
This is written with so much bro-love that it's impossible not to love it. It's a great example of a character profile, where the point is to draw the picture of a person who is extraordinary, not to outline and quote from a person whose career or accomplishments are the extraordinary part—something often lacking in our magazines. We loved the dry humor, and felt a profile of an an appealing, good person was a breath of fresh air, and full of memorable scenes, which were hard to come by in the remote world of a pandemic year.
