The Record, Boston University School of Law’s alumni publication, is published twice per year and posted online.
The spring 2020 edition cover story, “En Garde, Online,” features BU Faculty confronting the internet’s existential questions, including how to prevent harmful and illegal content while still protecting free speech rights. Bright and vibrant illustrations were used on the cover and within the article to convey the complex topic of the feature story: the dark side of the internet.

The illustrations within this submission very strongly support and complement the written piece, which poses important questions regarding how online behaviour, the power online platforms wield, and advances in technology affect our world, including individual’s own perceptions of fact and truth. The somewhat hidden nature of these dangers is perfectly captured by the strong use of light sources within the illustrations, with the shadows taking on the imposing and threatening aspects of bear traps and snakes. The style, tone, consistency, and execution of these illustrations are very, very strong. These pieces nicely raise up the subject matter to a higher level.
