The Diversity Digest
From the Nominator
The Diversity Digest is the flagship weekly email newsletter produced by UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs & Initiatives. Developed in March 2020, the opt-in newsletter offers UCLA alumni and community members ways to engage with the alumni community through a diverse, social justice lens.
The Diversity Digest was created as a community relations project with the intent of providing news, events, and learning opportunities related to diversity and social justice. Additionally, The Diversity Digest helps to identify and form a constituent group composed of UCLA alumni and other community supporters who seek to engage in diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice programs. The Diversity Digest also plays a key role in highlighting the successes of UCLA's diverse alumni while also addressing current, timely issues facing our communities. The opt-in nature of The Diversity Digest has allowed UCLA Alumni to tackle more controversial topics including the Black Lives Matter movement, addressing anti-Asian hate, gender recognition, and, most recently, the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6.
The weekly newsletter format allows content to be highly adaptive with design elements that emphasize the messaging. A digital landing page houses all past issues of The Diversity Digest, and also offers the opportunity to subscribe and access links to UCLA Alumni Diversity Programs & Initiatives events (updated monthly). Since its first issue released in March, 2020, The Diversity Digest has gained more than 9,000 individual subscribers and published 43 unique issues.
From the Judges
Many entries this year tackled issues of diversity and inclusion, but UCLA's entry stands out for its candid, journalistic approach to news of interest to the audiences served. The care for the audience is the most striking thing about this entry, and that intention was carried through the newsletter's execution. We thought your design strategy supported this approach well, and congratulate the UCLA team for a refreshingly honest approach to diversity, inclusion, and equity in higher education.
