Situational Ethics (The University of Chicago Magazine, Summer 2020)
From the Nominator
For eight years UChicago alumnus and lecturer John Paul Rollert has taught Ethics of Business to Chicago Booth MBA students. This spring the course was transformed—not just by being held remotely, but by a whole new set of questions the COVID-19 pandemic raised for the students about capitalism and its ethical nature. This four-page article, while short, used impactful illustration, not only to tell a great story but also to create a moment of graphic bombast within the pacing of the overall issue that was sure to capture a casual page flipper.
From the Judges
We found this storytelling presentation to be very creative and playful. The Zoom concept was clever and made you want to read the piece. The cartoon figures have personality that is appropriate for each of their historic references. There are many different design elements that jump out at you the longer you look at the story, such as the way each Zoom name is shown. The colors are bold and intriguing, especially on the black background. The typography was clean and simple. The callouts stood out and were well done. This piece took what could have been a dry subject and made it really engaging.
